Practicing the Way: Small Groups at Emmanuel

This fall, Emmanuel is starting something new, and we’d love for you to be part of it. We are forming small groups that will gather in homes to deepen relationships and practice following Jesus together.

Our guide will be Practicing the Way by John Mark Comer, which introduces ancient yet practical habits of Christian faith. Comer’s book describes eight different spiritual practices, and for this fall we have chosen to focus on the practice of prayer

Prayer is so much more than words we say to God. It’s the ongoing relationship God offers us in every moment of life. Sometimes we think prayer is only for “spiritual experts” or “the priests,” but Jesus reminds us that prayer is simply coming to God as children, with open hands and open hearts.

In our groups, we’ll explore what prayer looks like in real life. We’ll learn from Jesus’ teaching, try out new ways of prayer, and share the joys and struggles of keeping a prayer practice in the midst of busy lives. Prayer has the power to transform us, and by extension, our community and world. Prayer has the power help us grow in faith and love, and small groups have the ability to bring us closer together.

So, whether prayer feels natural or awkward to you, or if you aren’t familiar with prayer at all, you are invited to join a small group and see what happens. You can register here, in the weekly email, or by calling the church office. Come join us as we practice the way of Jesus together!
