Holy Baptism is the sacrament by which God adopts us as his children and makes us members of Christ’s body. At Emmanuel, we baptize children and adults by the sprinkling of water on the head. Confirmation is the sacramental rite in which we expresses a mature commitment to Christ, and receive strength from the Holy Spirit through prayer and the laying on of hands by a bishop. Confirmation is for any person who was baptized as an infant or child, or who has not yet received the laying on of hands by a bishop.

Reception is an opportunity for new Episcopalians whose prior Christian tradition was rooted in a “believer’s baptism.” If you have already made a public profession of faith and have been baptized, but are new to the Episcopal Church, Reception gives the opportunity to be received into our tradition by the bishop during their annual visit.

Perhaps you have already been baptized and confirmed, but have been absent from the church and faith for some time. The Reaffirmation of Baptismal Vows is an opportunity to stand before the bishop and publicly reclaim your faith. The opportunity falls under the category of “all may, some should, none must.”
