Mother’s Day & Penick

For over sixty years, Penick Village has embodied the Gospel’s call to care for our elders. Founded by The Rt. Rev. Edwin A. Penick, its mission was not simply to create a place where individuals could age in place, but also offer a home marked by dignity, security, and compassion. From the beginning, Bishop Penick envisioned a community where residents would receive continual care—even if they outlived their resources.

Bishop Penick understood Christ’s call to care for the vulnerable, especially those in the latter stages of life. We see this care modeled by Jesus himself as he hangs on the cross, entrusting a disciple to care for his mother:

“When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.”—John 19:26-27.

Out of this vision, the Benevolent Assistance Program was born, and the Diocese of North Carolina embraced this dream by calling on every congregation to support the Benevolent Assistance Fund through their loose plate offering on Mother’s Day.

This Sunday, as we honor our own mothers and celebrate our graduating seniors Dylan Giltzow and Charolotte Mills, we will also honor Bishop Penick’s legacy by supporting the Benevolent Assistance Fund. Loose plate offerings will go toward this mission, and special envelopes will be available in the pews for those who wish to give directly to Penick Village.

Together, we continue to strengthen the bond between Emmanuel Church and Penick Village—a partnership grounded in faith and love, ever reflecting the light of Christ from generation to generation.
