Advent Organ Recital Series

A note from Homer inviting you to join us at noon on Fridays in December for our Advent Organ Recital Series...

Our Bach’s Lunch Recital Series is one outreach component of the music ministry of Emmanuel Episcopal Church. The series has brought musical respite to our community through monthly offerings that unite parishioners, visitors, friends, and family in experiences that inspire, educate and most importantly, bring joy. The series has featured vocalists, international pianists, guitarists, early music ensembles, harpsichordists, organists, blue grass bands, jazz combos, violinists, flutists, brass quintets, harpists and more. Yet, it all started in December of 2010 with an Advent organ recital that I gave one Friday at noon. After the program, Isabel Parish approached me, and in her Selma, Alabama drawl stated, “Homer, that was wonderful. We should do this every month.” That marked the birth of the monthly Bach’s Lunch Series.

Every September, John Hatcher and the Bach’s Lunch Quartet traditionally kick off the season with a program of jazz music. Restrictions prevented that possibility this year and with the uncertainties of our current time, instead of outlining a full year’s program for 2020-2021, we have just extended the 2019-2020 series, offering concerts all through the summer and fall. If you have not had a chance to enjoy the music, those archived programs are available on our website and YouTube Channel.

Hearkening to our roots, for the month of December, the Bach’s Lunch Series will expand to include three Advent Organ Recitals. These noon concerts will occur on Friday, December 4th, Friday, December 11th, and Friday, December 18th. All of these programs will be broadcast live on our website, Facebook page, and YouTube channel for your enjoyment. Each will feature compositions of the Advent and Christmas seasons.

Our opening Advent organ recital on December 4th at 12 noon will feature yours truly. I will present a program of hymn-based music for the Advent and Christmas seasons that will include compositions based on the following hymns and carols: O Come, O Come, Emmanuel; Drummer Boy/Pat-a-Pan; Good Christian Friends, Rejoice; Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming; Creator of the Stars of Night; I Wonder as I Wander; The Huron Carol; He is Born, the Divine Christ Child.

On December 11th, Joe Setzer will be at the console of our Fisk pipe organ, offering works by Vivaldi, Bach, Buxtehude, Langlais and Messiaen. Mr. Setzer is a native of Charlotte, NC, and is a graduate of the University of South Carolina, where he earned both a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Music in Organ Performance. Joe is currently the interim director of music at St. Simon and St. Jude Episcopal Church in Columbia, South Carolina.

On December 18th, organist Mary Louise Baker will perform a program of works by Bach, Goemanne, and Chapman. She will be joined by cellist Leigh Montague, currently in her eighth year of teaching in the Cumberland County School system. Mrs. Baker holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Salem College and a Master of Music degree in Organ Performance from the University of Notre Dame, where she was awarded a full scholarship. Further organ studies have been completed in Germany and Canada. Mrs. Baker is currently the Organist and Director of Music at First United Methodist Church, Laurinburg, NC, and music teacher at Marlboro Academy, Bennettsville, SC. Ms. Montague is the conductor of the Snyder Memorial Baptist Church Youth String Orchestra and was named the 2020-21 Mac Williams Middle School Teacher of the Year.
