The Reverend John Gordon Talk, IV, joined our Parish as Rector in October 2015.  A native Texan (he comes by his cowboy boots naturally), Fr. John practiced law for several years before going to seminary and becoming a priest.

As a priest, Fr. John served as the Rector of Christ Church in Detroit, Michigan from 2009 to 2015. Christ Church is a beautiful historic multi-racial, multi-ethnic church in the Central Business District of Detroit. Fr. John also served as the Rector of The Church of the Epiphany in Wilbraham, Massachusetts and as the Priest in Charge of St. Mary's in Waynesville, Ohio.

John's wife Shelley, is loving life in the Sandhills since they relocated in 2015.  Shelley is a riding instructor and horse trainer who graduated from and worked for the Morven Park International Equestrian Institute.  Shelley primarily works with both field and show hunters, but enjoys anything horse related.

John and Shelley have five children and a couple of sons-in-law.  They also share their home with various dogs, horses, a mouse, and a flock of chickens.

The Rev. Dr. Sarah M. Rieth is the Priest Associate for Spiritual Direction at Emmanuel Episcopal Church.  Sarah is guided by Ignatian, Franciscan, and Benedictine spiritualities. She is a member of the Fellowship of St. John the Evangelist and is becoming an Oblate in the Erie Benedictine community.  Her dissertation (1993) focused on her retreat work helping people to discover the threads of grace amidst suffering.  Her spiritual direction work continues that focus, along with assisting people with life transitions, vocational discernment, and empowering people's Christian discipleship through focus on the fruits of the Spirit.

Sarah is a resident of Southern Pines since 2014, when she became the Chaplain at Penick Village.  Born and raised in Buffalo, New York, she was ordained there as deacon in 1977 and priest in 1978.  She has served most of her priestly vocation as a pastoral psychotherapist and spiritual director, both in Buffalo and in Charlotte, North Carolina. She is a Diplomate (retired) in the American Association of Pastoral Counselors, is a Certified North Carolina Fee-Based Practicing Pastoral Counselor (retired) and is a member of Spiritual Directors International.  Having moved to Charlotte from the hardscrabble North in 2001, Sarah worked hard to develop her inner Southerner.  In 2014, she began four years of joyful service as Chaplain at Penick Village.  She has worked with Episcopal dioceses and other judicatories to develop policies, procedures, prevention training, healing protocols and pastoral response teams to address misconduct in the church, and has provided healing consultations for churches of many denominations.  Sarah has served several congregations, including a deaf congregation in Buffalo.  For more information on spiritual direction, click here.
