January Outreach Spotlight | Boys & Girls Club

Boys & Girls Club of the Sandhills

Our January Outreach Spotlight is the Boys & Girls Club of the Sandhills.

The mission of the Boys & Girls Club of the Sandhills is to inspire, enable and educate young people from all backgrounds and circumstances to realize their full potential as responsible, productive and caring citizens. In 2018, this valuable community resource celebrated its 20th Anniversary, as well as welcoming Fallon Brewington as its new Chief Executive Officer. The Boys & Girls Club focuses on the unique needs of the boys and girls in the Sandhills. Providing a safe place where young people can grow scholastically, athletically, and socially, it offers the kind of positive influence which all young people need. The Club identifies several core program areas:

• Character and Leadership Development

• Education and Career Development

• Health and Life Skills

• The Arts • Sports, Fitness and Recreation

Growing beyond its original location in Southern Pines, the Boys & Girls Club added a second site at the Aberdeen Elementary School in 2002, and a third at Trinity A.M.E. Zion Church in Southern Pines in 2017. Annually the Club lists more than 1,000 young people as members, yet it typically serves more than 2,000 youth each year. Membership dues (just $35 per year per child) cover only a fraction of the cost to provide the Boys & Girls Club’s comprehensive and high-quality services – approximately $900 per member. The Club also has a policy of not turning away any child due to inability to pay, so scholarships are available as well. This is why it is absolutely vital to secure additional funding – from individuals, civic organizations, corporations, and federal, state and local grants, as well as various fundraising activities. The Boys & Girls Club has long been one of the organizations promoted and supported by Emmanuel’s Community Outreach Ministries, and this year we’re incorporating the spirit of holiday giving: As the Three Kings brought gifts to the baby Jesus – an event that we celebrate as the Feast of the Epiphany – we’re asking members of the congregation to wrap school supplies as gifts to bring to each of our Epiphany services on Sunday, January 6. At any time throughout the year, those interested in sponsoring an annual membership for a young person can find more information at www.sponsorachild.gift. Other opportunities for making financial contributions or volunteering to support the club are described at www. sandhillsbgc.org. Or contact Bob Howell, Outreach Committee chair, at 910.528.0541.
