July Outreach Spotlights

Our July Outreach Agencies are Moore County Literacy Council and Moore Free and Charitable Clinic. Each month we collect donations for our designated monthly outreach partners. Items in need this month are: new and gently-used children's books for the Moore County Literacy Council, and monetary donations for diabetic supplies for the Moore Free and Charitable Clinic (it costs the clinic about $1400 each month for these supplies). You can donate here  or through our app! Just make a memo of what it's for.

Moore County Literacy Council

Imagine not being able to read a bedtime story to your child or not being able to read a menu. Imagine not being able to read the label on your prescription bottle to determine how many pills to take.  This is what life is like for 10% of Moore County adults, who are not functionally literate. The Moore County Literacy Council was founded in 1987 when a few committed individuals recognized the crippling effects of illiteracy on individuals, families and communities.  MCLC volunteers teach basic life and literacy skills to Moore County adults. Students are assessed, and an individual learning plan is designed to help the student succeed.  Students are provided a personal tutor, reading books and study resources and access to the computer lab, all-free of charge.  In the last program year, 111 volunteers donated 5400 hours of teaching. While most volunteers are tutors, other opportunities include serving on the Board of Directors, working in the office, assisting with fundraising events and working on special projects. Anyone interested in volunteering is required to attend a 1-hour orientation, during which participants can learn about the different volunteer opportunities. A 12-hour tutor-training course is available for anyone who would like to be a tutor.  Please visit their website: www.mcliteracy.org.

Moore Free Care Clinic

Moore Free Care Clinic is a private, nonprofit organization which provides primary care services for a sliding scale fee for adults who meet certain eligibility guidelines. Even in a relatively affluent area like Moore County, there are many who are unable to access proper medical care because of its cost and because they lack health insurance coverage. The uninsured are all around us, but it is a silent epidemic. The Moore Free Care Clinic was established to help those in the community who have no other place to turn for health services. By helping provide primary care to people without insurance coverage, the Moore Free Care Clinic hopes to reduce the burden of preventable health problems in this community. Untreated, chronic diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure lead to complications which can disable or kill people. Helping people recognize and treat diseases in their early stages, instead of in the emergency room, improves outcomes and is cost-effective. While Moore Free Care Clinic is not the complete solution to the problem of the uninsured, it is a local, community-initiated response which improves the quality of life of many people in Moore County. The clinic has a small staff and many, many faithful volunteers who assist in all aspects of operations, including volunteer physicians, mid-level practitioners and nurses. The clinic is funded solely through the generosity of community donors and grants from various organizations. Moore Free Care Clinic is located at 211 Trimble Plant Road in Southern Pines. Phone: 910.246.5333.
